About

Frack Free Knostrop is a campaign being coordinated by Frack Free Leeds, a group organising against Fracking in Leeds. Knostrop water treatment works is located only 2 miles South East from the city centre, on the River Aire.

Knostrop has a permit to process industrial waste which allows it to take the Flowback fluid from Hydraulic Fracturing. This fluid is highly toxic and filled with heavy metals from the rock, the chemical lubricants pumped in, and radioactivity. Currently both Caudrilla, the company wanting to Frack in Lancashire, and Third Energy, in North Yorkshire, have said that should their applications be successful, they will be using Knostrop to process their fluids.

We say this is not OK. We don’t want hundreds more trucks carrying toxic liquid travelling across the M62. We don’t want the toxic liquid being processed in an area which flooded this winter. We don’t want the ‘processed’ water flowing in the Aire.  Leeds City Council has said they are against Fracking, and yet this is a key part of the process. Furthermore, processing this fluid is a key bottleneck in the industry, with very few processing plants having the permits to deal with the fluid.

The aim of this campaign is to make it impossible for Caudrilla, or Third energy, or Hutton, who are threatening to Frack Leeds, or indeed any other company, use Knostrop to process their flowback fluid from Fracking.

If you would like to get involved please get in contact, using the contact’s page, or find Frack Free Leeds on Facebook or on twitter @FrackFreeLeeds.

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday’s of every month, 7pm @ The George, in city center Leeds.
